Half-price fudge!

Hey fellow Dorchester peeps:

is featuring a half-price deal on a 2-pound box of fudge from Phillips Candy House. Phillips has been in Dorchester for a long time; my husband and I have tried their stuff, and it really is delish. Buy With Me is a new company that offers cheap deals at area businesses by getting people to order in a group. Check it out!

Why am I promoting this? Because the minimum number of people they need to get the deal is 25, and right now they only have 13. So if I'm to get *my* box of fudge, I need you to get *yours*! :-)

Is There Anywhere to Spend Time In Dorchester?

I just moved to this area near JFK/UMass, and I'm bad at exploring, but it looks to me as if my neighborhood is a vast collection of Irish bars full of gross townie guys who keep ducking out to whistle at me when I'm on my way home, Chinese grocers, and private residences. What am I missing? Anything?

I had this fantasy that there might be some sort of cafe with tables where it's cool to spend time with people and chat and junk. I know Boston in general is pretty bad for this, but c'mon, there must be a coffee house within walking distance? Some hipster joints with friendly people like I saw when I was briefly in JP?

I don't know anybody in my neighborhood but my roomies, and I'm not gonna meet them this way.

Quite a show in Dot tonight

I just came down from my roof, where I was able to watch at least half a dozen different fireworks shows. It was really impressive--loud as fuck, but really impressive. As long as no one gets hurt and nothing catches on fire, I'm really impressed. Go Dorchester--and thanks for the show!

Anyone else watch the local fireworks tonight?

DotOUT on Dot Day

Celebrate Dorchester Day by marching with your gay and lesbian friends and neighbors in the annual Dorchester Day parade to be held this year on Sunday, June 4. We will march for the third time. Marching has been fun and welcoming and is a positive way for us to participate in a great neighborhood tradition.

We will meet in front of Flat Black Coffee House in Lower Mills at 12:45 sharp, and then proceeding to the starting line of the parade. We are in Division 1 of the parade.

As in years past, you are invited to come to the annual DotOUT Dorchester Day Cookout hosted by Richard O'Mara and Robert Ferrini at Cedar Grove Gardens, 911 Adams Street. The event is a lot of fun, and you are invited to come whether you were able to march or not.

Co-op openings in Fields Corner

Like living in a large group but having space of your own?

Interested in cooperative principles?

Want to save money by spreading the costs of utilities and food?

The check out Boston Community Co-ops! We have a few openings in the Seed Pod housing coop in Fields Corner, Dorchester starting at various times this Spring and Summer. We share vegetarian meals, purchase our food collectively, share household chores, hold weekly house meetings, and are dedicated to community & social justice.

Our house is part of Boston Community Cooperatives (BCC), an organization formed to build community through cooperative living, member education, neighborhood improvement and collective action. Members participate in a no-equity model of communally-owned, democratically controlled and affordable residential cooperatives--in other words, you pay rent, but residents run things, and instead of going into a landlord's pocket, your rent helps to build the cooperative). BCC owns the 12-bedroom property in Dorchester, and rents an eight bedroom co-op in Somerville.

Rents range from $525/month to $575/month, depending on room size. Fore more info, visit http://www.bostoncoop.net/bcc/leroy, call 617-436-2965, or e-mail bcc-housing [at] bostoncoop [dot] net.
